Unlike Macintosh and Windows, which were both originally designed as single user computer systems, UNIX, Linux, and Mac OS X were designed for multi-user systems and it was important to make sure that files could only be accessed by the correct individual users.
UNIX and Linux file permissions are divided into user, group, and other. Other is also commonly called world.
Each user has a specific user ID number.
Each group has a specific group ID number.
