history: Eiffel (named for Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower) was released in 1986 by Bertrand Meyer. Work started on September 14, 1985.

It is intended to treat software construction as a serious engineering enterprise, and therefore is named for the French architect, Gustave Eiffel.
