first pass

    The logout facility will temporarily go to the index page. Later we will convert it to AJAX. The is done as a two step process to keep the work more simple and cut down on the possible causes of failures in new code.

<?php

/* FILE NAME /logout.php */

/******************************/
/* ProcessLogOut                                         */
/* log out from service */
/* called from index.php                               */
/******************************/
function ProcessLogOut()
{

$old_user = $_SESSION['valid_user'];
// store to test if they *were* logged in
unset($_SESSION);
$result_dest = session_destroy();

if (!empty($old_user))
{
  if ($result_dest)
  {
    // if they were logged in and are now logged out
?>
<div><h3 align="center">Logged out</h3></div>

<?php
  }
  else
  {
   // they were logged in and could not be logged out
    echo 'Could not log you out.<br />';
  }
}
else
{
  // if they weren't logged in but came to this page somehow
  echo 'You were not logged in, and so have not been logged out.<br />';
}

return '';

} /* ProcessLogOut */

?>
