first pass

    This code simply establishes a data base connection and reports success or failure.

    There are commented out lines that are for debugging. Didn’t need them, but was prepared.

    The PHP people have deprecated the functions I am using as of PHP 5.5.0, so this is something I will have to clean up. Because I am under time pressure with bad equipment, I will clean it up later.

<?php

/* ConnectCelebDataBase       */
/* connect to MySQL database */
/* called from index.php      */
/* $action NOT used yet       */
/******************************/
function ConnectCelebDataBase($action)
{

/* Connect To Database */

$hostname="localhost"; /* hiding the host name for security reasons. */

$username="username"; /* hiding the user name for security reasons. */

$password="password"; /* hiding the password for security reasons */

$dbname = 'strazslam'; /* this is the real database name */

$result = mysql_connect($hostname,$username, $password);

if (!$result )
  {
    echo "<h3 align=\"center\" style=\"color:#ff0000\">failed to connect</h3>";
    return false;
