George Boole was appointed professor of mathematics at Queens College in Cork, Ireland, in 1849. Boole introduced what is now called Boolean algebra in 1854 in his book The Laws of Thought. This branch of mathematics was essential for creating the complex circuits in modern electronic digital computers. Boole also wrote the influential books The Mathematical Analysis of Logic in 1848, which discussed symbolic logic. (See history of programming language)
