history of computers in France (Français)
In the early 1960s the French army created computerized flight simulators.
Also in the early 1960s French researcher Pierre Schaeffer did experimental 3-d computer animation artwork at the Service de recherche de FORTF, an experimental art laboratory run by Pierre Schaeffer.
In the early 1980s the French government encouraged 3-d animation, including the Imagina film festival. During this time the French company Thomson Digital Image created the Explore 3-d animation package.
In 1987, a consortium of airlines led by Air France and Lufthansa developed the Amadeus computerized airline reservation system.
In the mid-1990s the government of France sponsored the Minitel, a minicomputer that was wired into at least 14 million French homes, providing low cost pre-internet service. Home use featured a black and white screen.
In 2007 the French internet service provider Neuf Cegetel provided a low cost Linux-based computer with internet service. Neuf chose the open source Linux because Nearly 80 percent of all current customer calls relate to problems with Microsoft Windows, according to Frédéric Charrier, manager of the Easy Neuf project.
