computers in China

    This web page discusses computers in China.

    China is a major exporter of computers and data processing equipment.

    Internet country code: (ccTLD) .cn
    Internet hosts: 15.251 million (2010) (6th in the world)
    Internet users: 298 million (2008) (1st in the world)

    In March 2007 the computer maker Dell claimed that “About seven in 100 people own PCs in China, compared with two in 100 for India. About 25 million PCs were sold in China last year, more than four times the six million sold in India.”

1. Hong Kong

    With its high population density and strong government support, Internet access in Hong Kong is blazing fast. And unlike Internet lines just across the border, content censorship is virtually nonexistent. (China is ranked at No. 123, David Belson, editor of the report, said.)
    The average peak speed in Hong Kong was 54.1 megabits per second, according to Akamai, making it No. 1 on the list. At that speed, you could download the HD movie “Battleship,” which is set in Hong Kong, in about four minutes. But why would you want to?

history of computers in China

    The earliest calculating machine was the abacus, believed to have been invented in Babylon around 2400 BCE. The abacus was used by many different cultures and civilizations, including the major advance known as the Chinese abacus from the 2nd Century BCE. (See history of programming language)

    The Chinese developed the South Pointing Chariot in 115 BCE. This device featured a differential gear, later used in modern times to make analog computers in the mid-20th Century. (See history of programming language)

    All computers sold in China after June 30, 20009, must include government software called “Green Dam” that prevents access to pornography and other “vulgar” material, a law which the Chinese government states will protect children. Qin Gang, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said “If you have children or are expecting a child, you could understand the concerns of parents over unhealthy online content”.

    Consumers Union’s Consumer Reports, an independent, non-profit consumer organization, claims that the following are the best computers for 2011:
    Full Sized: HP Pavillon Elite HPE-440f;
    All-in-one: Sony Vaio VPCL137FX/B, Apple iMac 27-inch MB952LL/A, Apple iMac 21.5-inch MC508LL/A; Mini: Apple Mac Mini MC270LL/A;
    Laptop 15-inch: Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch MC371LL/A;
    Laptop small: Apple MacBook Air 11.6-inch;
    Smart phone: Apple iPhone 4 (32GB), Samsung Vibrant, Samsung Epic 4G, Apple iPhone 4 (16GB).
    Consumer Reports claims that the best times to purchase a computer are January, April, June, and October.

    Apple makes its computers in China. The Apple Store offers Macintosh computers for China. Apple claims “Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork, and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple is reinventing the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.” I wonder if Apple can scientifically verify these claims.
